Nominet Board Election - 2009This Straw Poll is about the election of 'non-executive' Directors to Nominet UK - the organisation that is responsible for domain names that end in .uk Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) are generally there to provide a governing device (as with a machine, to stop it running away without control). The Nominet NEDs are elected by the 'members' of Nominet, although some voters are more equal than others (it all gets a little sticky from here, if you really want to know, go look through the Nominet UK website). Unlike the existing system of huge blocks of votes controlled by a very small number of "Registrars", this Straw Poll is open to everyone. The statements from the candidates can be found by clicking their name below. Clive Feather You will notice the inclusion of "NONE OF THE ABOVE" in my poll. This is NOT included in the Official Nominet Election. You will also notice that unlike the Official Nominet Election, I'm not going to tell you who to vote for, that's up to you, and if you're too thick, or lazy to work out what's best for you, and Nominet, then perhaps you shouldn't vote at all, or have anything to do with computers or the Internet. HOW TO VOTE: The Voting algorithm used to calculate is 'Borda Count' (Go Google it if you don't understand). The Poll Closed 10am UK Time on 8th July 2009
NONE OF THE ABOVE 7% (142) Neil Stanley 3% (73) Jonathan Robinson 6% (127) Nora Nanayakkara 14% (293) Sebastien Lahtinen 16% (331) Subhi Hashwa 6% (130) Graeme Wingate 11% (239) Clive Grace 11% (225) Clive Feather 27% (574) Total voters: 107

Domain Deletion Threat
(Disclaimer: I am a Nominet member)
Could you please disclose what reason Nominet gave for threatening deletion of your domain ?
If that reason is not listed in http://www.nic.uk/registrants/aboutdomainnames/rules/, I would be very interested in raising this threat with the Nominet Board and the folks at ICANN.
In short, don't let them push you around... if they delete your domain without a damn good reason that can be backed up by their 'rules', this will do nothing more than show the Government that Nominet *do* need to be regulated and that is the last thing they want!
What are Nominet worried about?
Nominet seem quite interested in this little poll.
There have been 26 different Nominet IP addresses logged here over the last couple of days (most of them making multiple visits totalling 3,463 hits), together with an email threatening to delete the domain name.
Because the votes cast are confidential and secret I am unable to ascertain if any of these visits resulted in a vote, but if they did, well, best not go there eh? (Although I have to admit that I don't really care - Nominet staff are just as welcome to vote as anyone else, and as you'll see, make comments anonymously if they feel it helps).
So come on Nominet peeps, why are you apparently so interested / worried about a poll on a site with the slogan "... as if anyone cares"?
Why have I suddenly been threatened with having the domain deleted?
Feel free to comment if you like - it is strictly confidential and I don't censor anything.
Nominet voter dissatisfaction
Hi, I work for Nominet and would be happy to discuss this with whoever set up this poll (email supplied). I just wanted to say that we have put caps in place to stop the largest registrars controlling any votes. It's probably over complicated, but no member can hold more than 3% of actual votes cast. When you consider that the two biggest members have approx 35% of .uk domain names between them, this is a significant cap. It also means that smaller registrars votes DO count. Please do not think your vote is not important.
